Molens in het Westzijderveld bij Zaandam, 1871 (收藏於梵谷博物館)
Claude Monet paid three visits to the Netherlands. During the first of these visits he spent four months in Zaandam with his wife and child. The painter thought it ‘all very amusing. Houses in every colour, mills by the hundred and delightful boats, exceptionally friendly Hollanders who almost all speak French.’ He wrote to his friend Camille Pissarro that there was enought to paint for an entire lifetime. Or at any rate for an entire summer, as no less than 24 canvases survive from his time in Zaandam. (http://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/vgm/index.jsp?page=4841&lang=en)

The Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam (Looking up the Groenburgwal) c. 1874
In 1871 and 1874, the famous French impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840-1926) visited Amsterdam. He was impressed by the clouds and the grey light, but was not happy with his paintings, which -as this page shows- did not "catch" the Amsterdam light. Monet never exposed these works, which are still not very well-known; not even their names are recorded.
One of the paintings Monet made, now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and included in the Wilderstein Catalog as #399. The clouds and the blue sky are more reminiscent of southern France than of Holland. Note that the trees on the painting have lost their leaves, so it was made in the autumn, when the Amsterdam sky is usually hazy. Monet created something that was too sunny.  This painting was bought by the family of the American painter Mary Cassatt (1845-1926); Monet made a second copy, bought by a Rumanian collector named Belliot. The church, by the way, is the Zuiderkerk (southern church). (http://www.livius.org/dutchhistory/amsterdam/amsterdam_monet.html)

1866年,莫奈以卡米耶·东西厄(Camille Doncieux)为模特兒创作了《绿衣女人》(The Woman in the Green Dress)。

La Femme a l'ombrelle

With Manet's assistance, Monet found lodging in suburban Argenteuil in late 1871, a move that initiated one of the most fertile phases of his career. Impressionism evolved in the late 1860s from a desire to create full–scale, multi–figure depictions of ordinary people in casual outdoor situations. At its purest, impressionism was attuned to landscape painting, a subject Monet favored. In Woman with a Parasol – Madame Monet and Her Son, his skill as a figure painter is equally evident. Contrary to the artificial conventions of academic portraiture, Monet delineated the features of his sitters as freely as their surroundings. The spontaneity and naturalness of the resulting image were praised when it appeared in the second impressionist exhibition in 1876.

Woman with a Parasol was painted outdoors, probably in a single session of several hours' duration. The artist intended the work to convey the feeling of a casual family outing rather than a formal portrait, and used pose and placement to suggest that his wife and son interrupted their stroll while he captured their likenesses. The brevity of the moment portrayed here is conveyed by a repertory of animated brushstrokes of vibrant color, hallmarks of the style Monet was instrumental in forming. Bright sunlight shines from behind Camille to whiten the top of her parasol and the flowing cloth at her back, while colored reflections from the wildflowers below touch her front with yellow. 愛德華·马奈(法文:Édouard Manet,1832年1月23日-1883年4月30日),出生在法国巴黎的寫實派與印象派画家。(http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/愛德華·馬奈)

In the summer of 1874, Manet stayed at his family's house in Gennevilliers, just across the Seine from Monet in Argenteuil. The Monet family was living in a house that Manet had helped them find the year before. The two painters saw each other often that summer and Manet attempted twice to paint Monet and his wife Camille as Monet worked aboard his floating studio.
