南朝梁普通七年（公元526年），印度名僧达摩从海路到广州，在华林寺附近登岸并建“西来庵”，是达摩在我国最先传播佛教之地。后人为纪念这位高僧，称其登岸处为“西来初地”，一直沿用至今。西来庵历代均有扩建，清顺治十一年（公元1701年）改称华林寺，是当时的广州佛教五大丛林之一。
      现主要建筑为罗汉堂，罗汉堂内五百罗汉像在“文革”时被毁，阿育王神塔亦不知去向。1997年重立木雕的五百罗汉像。
