英文名称: Durham castle and Cathedral
      达勒姆城中的名胜首推大教堂。它建于1093年到1130年之间，是英国最典型的诺曼底式教堂，具有窗高壁厚、柱粗拱圆的特点。西面屹立着两座对称的四方高塔，中间又耸起一座，造型即雄浑又壮观。教堂北大门上，装饰着一个鬼脸，口中含着被磨拭得很光亮的铜环。这是12世纪的遗物。中世纪时，不知有多少无辜的罪人，历经艰辛，来到门前，为的是握住这道门环，以求神的赦免。

　  在达勒姆大教堂的建设过程中，建筑师们首次采用了在英格兰属于独创的十字横肋穹顶技术，以此克服了罗马风格中迄今多余而笨拙的筒形穹顶的建筑方式，从而开辟了通向更精细、更纤巧的哥特式艺术之路。原先承受着穹顶的重力和推力的坚固的墙，现在被十字横肋和支柱替代，重负通过它被导向下方。这种新的构造种类，使更高大的空间和更空灵的外墙成为可能。达勒姆大教堂的尝试标志着一种崭新艺术形式发展阶段的肇始，这个发展阶段在伟大的哥特式大教堂里达到了顶峰。由于这个缘故，达勒姆大教堂规模之大在当时是很不寻常的，60米长、12米宽的教堂中堂达到了22米的可观的高度。据说，电影《哈利·波特》的教堂外景就是这里。来源于 我爱基督教： www.wajdj.cn 原文链接：http://www.wajdj.cn/jidujiao/347.html

Gloucester Cathedral, in Gloucester, England, stands in the north of the city near the river. It originated with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter in 678 or 679 (dissolved by King Henry VIII of England).
